Camper Ninja-Supported Volunteering Mission Continues To Raise Funds

Tarporley High School students, Grace and Evie Lyon, will spend a month assisting with community projects

You may have read in a previous blog post a few months ago that here at Camper Ninja, we are proud to currently be sponsoring two sisters from the local Tarporley High School, Grace and Evie Lyon, who are currently fundraising for a volunteering trip with Camps International – a social enterprise that works with communities in developing countries.

We’re pleased to say that Grace and Evie are currently already almost halfway to their target of raising £10,000, with an impressive £4,200 now secured – congratulations to you both!

The girls’ mother, Helen, explains the aim of the ambitious trip in her own words below.

“Sisters Grace and Evie Lyon, students at Tarporley High School, have raised almost half of their £10,000 fundraising target to fund a four-week volunteering trip to Costa Rica in 2024.

“The trip is being run by Camps International – a social enterprise set up in 2002 by philanthropist and ex-British Army Officer, Stuart Rees Jones, who after spending several years leading expeditions to Tanzania and Kilimanjaro, felt frustrated that he was unable to make a significant and lasting impact on the host environments and realised that a permanent camp, located and staffed by the community, could be a solution to delivering on local challenges.

“Today, Camps International has established camps in 16 countries across the world – including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Borneo, Cambodia, Nepal, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Iceland.

“Grace and Evie have so far raised a whopping £4,200 towards their Costa Rica expedition, since signing up for their trip back in October 2022. They both have weekend jobs waitressing and babysitting and have raised money at local events including selling ethical products, cakes, sweets and candy floss at local village markets, running raffles and selling items on Vinted.

“They have also been lucky enough to be sponsored by family, friends and local companies including Camper Ninja, Deborah Wise Wills, Emmay School of Irish Dance, Ethical Me, Instinct Gym, Kelsall Cycles, Le Core Coffee Roasters, Nicole James hairdressers, OM Tarporley, Reva Green Florist & Cafe, Rooted Tree Surgeons, The Firs Vets and The Swan at Tarporley

“The trip, which takes place in July 2024, will see the girls working with local communities getting involved with development projects to help improve infrastructure and facilities.

“In addition, they will be involved in wildlife conservation projects, environmental conservation projects and marine conservation projects.

“Costa Rica has one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. It is the only tropical country to have more or less stopped and then reversed deforestation and now has one of the world’s highest percentages of protected areas.”

The girls have a further 12 months of fundraising ahead of them to get them to their final target. If you would like to sponsor them and are able to, every penny donated means so much.
